Introduction to CYMRC
The CYMRC was appointed by the Minister of Health in September 2001. It is an independent committee appointed by and reporting to the Minister of Health.
The Committee is administratively accountable to the Director-General of Health through the Deputy Director General of Clinical Services Directorate. The Committee's secretariat is located within the Ministry of Health.
The focus of the committee is to advise the Minister of Health on how to reduce preventable deaths of New Zealand children and youth aged from 4 weeks old to 24 years old.
The CYMRC aims to collect a standard set of information for every New Zealand child and youth who dies. Local and or national review of this information can help to identify:
national trends and patterns of illness, incidents and accidents leading to death which may indicate where health, education, social or environmental systems are not functioning to protect children and young people
policies and initiatives that government and non-government agencies can develop to keep children and young people safe and healthy.
