About Us

This section provides an introduction to the Child and Youth Mortality Review Committee (CYMRC), including information about our
members, statement of purpose, terms of reference, meetings, and the work of local groups.

Introduction to CYMRC

The CYMRC was appointed by the Minister of Health in September 2001. It is an independent committee appointed by and reporting to the Minister of Health.


The Committee is administratively accountable to the Director-General of Health through the Deputy Director General of Clinical Services Directorate. The Committee's secretariat is located within the Ministry of Health.

The focus of the committee is to advise the Minister of Health on how to reduce preventable deaths of New Zealand children and youth aged from 4 weeks old to 24 years old.

The CYMRC aims to collect a standard set of information for every New Zealand child and youth who dies. Local and or national review of this information can help to identify:
